SPOP is one of the seven ANR projects selected within the Agrobiosphere programme 2011. It deals with palm oil sustainability assessment, a key issue giving the large use of palm oil in the world today, about 30% of total vegetal oils by volume.

The “Agrobiosphere” programme from ANR aims to define transitions towards new production systems in a context of adaptation to the future global change.

The cultivation of oil palm has become emblematic of the trade-off between development and conservation that agricultural commodities have to face: matching an increasing global demand while preserving the capacity of land to provide ecosystems services, and preserving natural forests.
