SPOP people investigate impacts of palm oil production systems in both Indonesia and Cameroon.

SPOP aims at assessing the 3D impacts of palm oil production systems in two countries, Indonesia and Cameroon. Most research effort and field works are concentrated in Indonesia which is the first producing country worldwide nowadays. But the project also aims at comparing the diverse systems in Indonesia and Cameroon in order to identify best suitable tracks for further oil palm development in Cameroon, and Africa.

Raymond Nkongho has started his Ph.D. thesis by investigating the palm oil production systems in Cameroon. He is now focusing his research on palm oil systems in Indonesia. He is notably investigating these systems in Jambi province in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Indeed, two provinces have been selected as field areas for SPOP field work. Jambi and Riau provinces are two close provinces in Sumatra, Indonesia, that have a different history in terms of palm oil development. A report from Alice Baudoin (to be published on this site soon) has detailed the history of palm oil in Indonesia and in these two provinces. These two provinces were chosen for SPOP researches in order to account for system variability that may be intrinsically related to the province history and to current varying opportunities and barriers. SPOP partners in these two provinces may vary and may affect the way we access the field.
